You can start your maternity leave and SMP any time from 11 weeks before your expected week of childbirth. The earliest you can start receiving SMP is the beginning of the 11th week before your baby is due.
SMP stands for Statutory Maternity Pay. It's the minimum amount employers must pay eligible employees during maternity leave. In 2025, SMP is paid for up to 39 weeks at 90% of earnings for 6 weeks, then £184.03 per week or 90% of earnings (whichever is lower) for 33 weeks.
If you're self-employed, you can't get SMP but you might be eligible for Maternity Allowance. This is £184.03 a week or 90% of your average weekly earnings (whichever is less) for up to 39 weeks.
For 2025, Statutory Maternity Pay is: First 6 weeks at 90% of your average weekly earnings (no upper limit), then £184.03 per week for the next 33 weeks, or 90% of your average weekly earnings if that's less.
